Economic Trends, Financial Reporting Developments and Your Finance Department As the chief financial officer for a Christian nonprofit organization you face a world of complexity, and offer a vital role in helping your organization achieve its kingdom mission. In this forum we will examine U.S. economic trends that will impact your stewardship of ministry finances.
We will explore the best ways to communicate key financial data with boards. And we will consider some of the key financial reporting changes and trends impacting the Christian nonprofit world today. Then we will discuss how your finance department can be a “mission accelerator” for your organization.

Mike Batts is Managing Partner for Batts Morrison Wales & Lee. He has more than 30 years of experience serving nonprofit organizations in a variety of ways. Mike advises nonprofit organizations on matters related to board governance, financial reporting, tax compliance and strategy, risk management, corporate structure, international activities, and related topics. He also advises those organizations on engaging in nonprofit legislative matters at the federal and state levels.
Jennifer is a ministry financial professional who most recently served as the Controller for FamilyLife, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Cru (Campus Crusade for Christ).
Prior to joining FamilyLife in 2014, Jennifer worked in various finance roles at Fortune 500 companies including Verizon Wireless and Windstream Communications.
She is a licensed CPA and holds a Bachelor of Science in Accounting from Arkansas Tech University and MBA from the University of Arkansas.
Jennifer currently resides in central Arkansas with her husband, William and their daughter, Shelby.
Mike Lee is a Partner and National Director of Audit and Assurance Services for BMWL with supervisory responsibility for the firm’s auditing practice and assisting in overseeing the firm’s education and training programs. Mike has more than 20 years experience in auditing nonprofit organizations and analyzing internal controls. Mike graduated from the University of Central Florida and was honored with a state of Florida “Top 10” award for completing the CPA exam upon his first sitting.
Nathan Salsbery is a CapinCrouse partner in the Colorado Springs and Denver offices and serves as Executive Vice President for the West region. In this role, he has oversight responsibility for operations and client service in the Brea, Colorado Springs, Denver, Los Angeles, San Diego, and San Francisco offices. For over 15 years, Nathan has provided various assurance and consulting services to numerous types of nonprofit organizations, including Christian colleges and universities, churches and denominations, and international missions organizations. Prior to joining CapinCrouse in 2008, he was a senior auditor with Crowe Horwath LLP. Nathan also has nearly 10 years of nonprofit industry experience serving on staff part-time as Associate Pastor at his local church.

Bryan Taylor currently serves as the Chief Investment and Executive Officer for Cornerstone Management, Inc. Mr. Taylor joined Cornerstone in 1997 as a Financial Analyst and assumed the role of Portfolio Manager and Principal in 1999. Mr. Taylor has over 20 years of investment consulting experience and holds the prestigious Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) designation (2003). A Presidential Scholar, Mr. Taylor graduated Summa Cum Laude from Bryan College (1995), having earned a B.S. in Business Administration with a concentration in Finance.
Mark Tjernagel is the Chief Financial Officer of Cru (Campus Crusade for Christ) where he has helped to accelerate the fulfillment of the great commission through sound financial leadership for over twenty years. In his role with Cru, Mark also serves as Treasurer for The Global Aid Network, The Great Commission Foundation, and serves on the board of directors for New Life Insurance. Mark is also a board member and treasurer for Christian Leadership Alliance. Mark has a BBA degree from Texas A&M University, where he majored in Accounting. He is also a recent graduate of Lifework Leadership in Orlando
